00:00:08:13 Welcome back to HoTTTs TopiXXX.
00:00:12:11 Hi! I am Jim Dupree and we are ready for our second
00:00:16:10 hot topic.
00:00:18:08 I don't know if you know this
00:00:19:20 but researchers recently discovered
00:00:21:28 that the majority of the ten million people
00:00:24:28 currently on this planet, Earth are old.
00:00:29:06 Old people very, very close to their deaths
00:00:32:27 and here is the rub, old people are useless.
00:00:36:20 They cannot text, they cannot IM.
00:00:40:08 They are very, very unskilled at Microsoft Excel.
00:00:44:14 So, our second topic is,
00:00:46:14 how do we deal with our aging populations.
00:00:50:27 Let me get a variety of opinions,
00:00:51:28 I want to start though with Dr. Jeff.
00:00:55:15 Do you have any old people in your life?
00:00:56:28 I have many old people in my life.
00:00:58:18 I am surrounded by old people.
00:01:00:21 I think you know as you said, Jim,
00:01:03:17 I think we got to switch this 180 degrees around,
00:01:07:25 we are looking at this the wrong way.
00:01:09:12 You just told me, ten million people on this earth,
00:01:12:18 a majority of them are old.
00:01:14:26 We are missing the boat.
00:01:16:08 We have got to get old.
00:01:18:17 Everybody is getting old, and we have got to old too.
00:01:21:13 Why would that be a good thing?
00:01:22:20 How on earth would making more of us feeble
00:01:27:01 curry eating oldsters help anything?
00:01:30:11 Well, who is going to take care of them?
00:01:31:13 I mean, do you want to be the person
00:01:32:17 who is taking care of the old people?
00:01:34:07 Or do you want to be taken care of?
00:01:36:16 You have to become old and feeble.
00:01:39:18 But, what about the value.
00:01:41:12 First of all, you haven't really defined terms here Jim.
00:01:44:01 What are you saying is old?
00:01:45:18 Old? Yes. I said pick a number.
00:01:48:00 I would say... pick a number...
00:01:49:11 well, I would like to know your opinion.
00:01:50:13 What do you consider old in your mind?
00:01:54:03 Well, I think society has pretty decided that
00:01:55:27 anybody over 40 is old.
00:01:57:14 No, I would disagree.
00:01:58:24 I would say you have to be a 110 plus to be old.
00:02:02:13 Well, then you are talking about
00:02:03:29 the ten million people on the planet,
00:02:05:25 there is probably about 15 of them,
00:02:08:03 -that are over a 115. -Right.
00:02:11:10 So, you are talking about the problem of those 15 people?
00:02:14:21 No, no, I am saying, the research, I have got right
00:02:17:29 here says, of the ten million people on the Earth,
00:02:20:11 the majority are old,
00:02:21:25 and by our definition, old would be older than 110.
00:02:25:05 so, I am guessing, that we have got ten million people,
00:02:28:16 110 plus.
00:02:29:23 -I really question that. -Close to that,
00:02:32:26 you call up the people at MIT and ask them
00:02:35:28 -but I think -I would like to know.
00:02:37:13 They have got the hard facts right here.
00:02:39:12 but I guess, the question is what do we do with them.
00:02:42:18 We learn from them.
00:02:44:12 What has an old person ever taught about you about anything.
00:02:47:28 They have lot of experience.
00:02:50:19 Taught you about taking a difficult bowel movement may be.
00:02:52:23 They taught me about...
00:02:53:22 Taught you about making old gross candy.
00:02:56:19 No, they have years, decades... like you are telling...
00:03:00:28 a 100 years of experiences.
00:03:03:14 You are talking about wrapping up the value,
00:03:07:03 whether or not you can text like a monkey.
00:03:09:08 Yes, they can't do that.
00:03:10:08 I don't know anybody over a 100
00:03:12:10 who is regularly online or texting.
00:03:15:04 Wait, where do you see this.
00:03:16:13 I think the true value in keeping old people around is
00:03:20:16 just to use them with our technology.
00:03:23:17 I don't know if you have ever seen like "Two Girls One Cup."
00:03:26:28 there is this video on YouTube of some girl showing
00:03:30:13 her grandmother, "Two Girls One Cup."
00:03:33:11 it's the best thing I have ever seen.
00:03:36:13 It's better than "Two Girls One cup."
00:03:38:08 Can we take that a little further.
00:03:39:28 You are talking about integrating
00:03:40:28 old people and technology,
00:03:43:20 why not take their fleshy, saggy, human parts,
00:03:49:05 and augment them with some sort of robotics,
00:03:52:00 may be made like a robogranny, or an electronic grandpa.
00:03:58:08 So you are talking about a hybrid human?
00:03:59:28 A hybrid human who could be old but not useless.
00:04:04:13 Would they be gas powered?
00:04:07:14 I mean, the old people that I know
00:04:09:14 generate a fair amount of gas from all of the roads.
00:04:12:28 Methane operated. Methane operated.
00:04:15:15 So they could be gas... and what do you see Dr. Jeff
00:04:19:10 as the future of old people.
00:04:21:13 Like should we continue to keep them around or
00:04:23:28 should we as some people have advocated kill them all.
00:04:27:28 In some cultures it's quite common for,
00:04:30:10 when you hit a certain birthday,
00:04:32:01 you say, "Oh, granny, oh, grandpa,
00:04:33:28 we are going to take you a on trip up the site of a mountain."
00:04:37:15 It turns out not to be a mountain,
00:04:39:08 it turns out to be a volcano.
00:04:40:27 They get pushed in the side.
00:04:42:06 There is this little blessing that's said,
00:04:44:08 and that's the end of it,
00:04:45:20 and no more burden on the family.
00:04:49:27 We all do it our own way.
00:04:51:09 You have a person who is 100 years old.
00:04:53:16 You make a beautiful birthday cake.
00:04:55:20 You have a 100 candles, you light them all up,
00:04:58:10 and then you say, blow those out.
00:05:01:05 -Chances are -The heart attack.
00:05:02:26 -They will be dead before they get to -That's clever.
00:05:05:15 85 or 90 of them.
00:05:07:04 Or their hair which is fake probably
00:05:11:12 catches some fire,
00:05:12:21 or their hideous polyester cloths,
00:05:14:18 that little jump suit catches on fire, and they burn to death.
00:05:19:08 -That seems awfully -Possibly.
00:05:21:05 That seems incredibly cruel.
00:05:23:12 I am wondering if you can imagine
00:05:24:26 a world without old people.
00:05:26:29 What that world would be like.
00:05:29:02 Personally I think about all of the retirement homes
00:05:32:00 that are currently sitting there,
00:05:33:21 housing these useless technophobes
00:05:37:05 who don't want to stay up-to-date
00:05:40:18 with the world that they live in,
00:05:41:21 many of them think it's still 2002.
00:05:45:08 That's true.
00:05:46:28 I think about the space that they are wasting,
00:05:49:04 could we not just get rid of all of the old people,
00:05:51:25 may be push them in a volcano
00:05:53:03 and get rid of the retirement homes and build an
00:05:56:15 amusement park or some other kind of attraction.
00:05:58:13 I want to go quickly down the line and just in a word or two,
00:06:01:28 what do you think we should use that space for?
00:06:04:03 We should use it for gas stations.
00:06:07:04 Gas station. Cathy?
00:06:08:13 Reclaiming the retirement homes.
00:06:10:23 Spin farming.
00:06:11:28 Spin farming and Jeff?
00:06:14:11 Overflow parking. Overflow parking.
00:06:17:03 Excellent idea.
00:06:17:28 You win the championship.
00:06:19:14 Stick around we have got more HoTTT TopiXXX
