00:00:15:16 they seem to be everywhere.
00:00:17:02 They are in movies, they are on television,
00:00:19:09 they are in your children's schools.
00:00:21:03 And with all these vampires around us all the time,
00:00:24:07 we have to ask,
00:00:25:06 are they good role models for our children?
00:00:29:20 Rob Scott, we start with you.
00:00:31:16 Well, I think for the answer of that question Jim you just got
00:00:33:20 to look at the most popular vampire movie of recent history.
00:00:37:05 I am of course talking about Wes Craven's
00:00:39:12 Vampire in Brooklyn starring Eddie Murphy.
00:00:41:22 From that film you will find out that vampires, they don't eat,
00:00:44:29 they don't drink, they don't have sex
00:00:46:25 and they have a strong understanding of religion.
00:00:49:00 These are all qualities you want our kids just to
00:00:51:02 kind of grab and say, "By Jupiter,
00:00:52:28 I want to be embedded with these qualities."
00:00:55:22 -Embedded. -Embedded.
00:00:56:28 That's a strong, strong opening argument.

00:01:01:08 Jim, I think with all due respect the time to ask
00:01:04:21 whether vampires are good role models
00:01:06:23 for our children has long come and gone.
00:01:09:06 The fact of the matter is they are here, they are role models.
00:01:13:09 Now, we have to think what are we going to do about it?

00:01:16:28 We have to look to the future.

00:01:21:06 Zal, let's talk a little about the blood drinking.
00:01:25:02 Is that something you want your kids to look at and emulate?
00:01:28:23 The blood drinking is a problem, the biting is a problem,
00:01:31:18 but I think we are missing the point here,
00:01:33:19 the biggest problem is the fact that
00:01:36:03 we are dealing with Romanians.
00:01:37:20 And that's the end of it for me because
00:01:40:00 I can love everybody in this God's green earth Jim
00:01:46:12 but I really have a trouble with Romanians.
00:01:50:03 I want to talk about the vampire in popular culture.
00:01:54:20 There are all kinds of movies nowadays,
00:01:56:28 all kinds of television programs as we mentioned
00:01:59:12 and probably the sort of ultimate,
00:02:02:18 the archetypal vampire is from Star Trek,
00:02:06:16 which is Mr. Spock, right.
00:02:09:12 A very logical vampire,
00:02:11:19 had that sort of classic vampire look
00:02:14:27 but he had a lot of very, very good qualities.
00:02:17:06 He could do the vampire mind-mount,
00:02:19:21 he could do the nerve pinch,
00:02:23:03 the vampire nerve pinch and
00:02:24:24 then he would suck your blood.
00:02:26:09 So I guess I am just wondering about
00:02:28:21 sort of popular culture
00:02:29:24 and why we are seeing so many of them.
00:02:32:20 Stephanie any thoughts on sort of just...
00:02:36:28 Why they are so ubiquitous?
00:02:38:00 What is it about the vampires
00:02:39:10 that makes you interested in them?
00:02:41:13 Well I think it's the sucking of the blood frankly.
00:02:43:13 Really, yeah. Yeah.
00:02:45:14 It's funny I don't remember Spock doing it.
00:02:49:06 He was what they call a space vampire.
00:02:52:00 Let's not forget about the negatives of Spock,
00:02:54:12 because clearly as a vampire he had no reflection,
00:02:56:29 -hence the haircut. -Oh yeah.
00:02:59:15 And I mean let's look at like he is a very positive role model
00:03:03:08 but let's look at someone like Count Dracula.
00:03:05:18 Oh yes. He is kettling sugar,
00:03:07:26 I don't even think there is sugar in those things.
00:03:08:28 I think it's that corn syrup stuff.
00:03:11:17 It's like crack.
00:03:12:13 It's not sugar, it's marshmallow.
00:03:13:28 -Marshmallow. -Giant bat Marshmallow.
00:03:15:16 You know what's in marshmallows?
00:03:16:10 -Gypsy tears -Gypsy tears
00:03:18:15 and Romanians.
00:03:19:29 Romanians and it goes back to the Star Trek analogy
00:03:24:09 with the Vulkan, a vampire and related to the Romulans,
00:03:31:01 hence the Romanians.
00:03:32:13 I am done with Romanians.
00:03:35:03 You have brought it back to the drinking of the blood
00:03:37:16 and I think that's sort of central to what vampires are.
00:03:41:06 Let's talk a little bit about the nutritional content of...
00:03:45:09 because I know you had a previous life Zal,
00:03:47:03 as a nutritionist.
00:03:48:18 Is there actually any food value in blood?
00:03:52:05 There is tons of food value in blood
00:03:53:22 and that's why I am torn with this
00:03:55:03 because you mentioned the blood sucking
00:03:58:03 and there is nothing better than a blood pudding,
00:04:02:22 a blood sausage, a blood popcorn,
00:04:06:22 it's all good.
00:04:08:06 It's all...
00:04:09:19 I am sorry I have to disagree, because in blood,
00:04:12:04 you have plasma, you have your white cells, your red cells,
00:04:15:05 you terrorist cells, all kinds of bad things
00:04:17:10 that are just not good for children or adults.
00:04:19:18 And getting back to the sugar or chocolate example
00:04:22:26 he has just got those two big teeth but
00:04:25:09 what's going on with the rest of them.
00:04:26:13 They are all gone.
00:04:27:16 Another strong characteristics of most vampires
00:04:30:13 is the ability to turn into a bat.
00:04:33:13 Like we have seen this time and time again.
00:04:36:01 A lesser known quality of vampires,
00:04:38:13 they can turn into not just the animal,
00:04:40:06 a bat, but a cricket bat or a baseball bat.
00:04:44:12 Again, are we promoting very violent,
00:04:48:05 violent role models for our kids?
00:04:50:22 Pick up a baseball bat, there was once a vampire and
00:04:54:01 bludgeoned someone to death.
00:04:55:16 Forget about the role models,
00:04:56:28 what about the actual implications
00:04:57:28 for professional sports?
00:04:59:16 Sure we banned the steroids but how we are going to know that
00:05:01:09 someone is playing with a real bat, or a vampire bat.
00:05:03:18 I mean, I am pretty sure you hit them out of the park
00:05:05:20 with those things.
00:05:07:04 And vampire bats I believe have been rated at about
00:05:11:05 a 112% of what a regular regulation bat would be.
00:05:15:02 -Unfair advantage. -Unfair advantage.
00:05:16:09 Just before we wrap up I want to go across the panel and
00:05:20:09 maybe just give your best vampire impression.
