If you grew up in the late 80s/early 90s, you know the name Danny Tanner. For the late-comers, you'll recognize Tanner by his real name, Bob Saget. Full House was a required viewing back when I was a wee lad, back when the Olsen Twins were diaper-wearing, saggy-eyed poop machines and not more commonly referred to as, well, hot. The Roast of Bob Saget commenced over the weekend and I had the good fortune of catching a few clips.

Yep, Danny Tanner/Bob Saget taught many a life lesson back in the day. For instance, stealing is bad. Another, honesty is the best policy. And of course, driving the car into the kitchen is unsanitary...among other things. This is Danny Tanner. This is NOT Bob Saget. A regular in comedy clubs across the states, Saget established himself in the stand-up scene with explicit material and unabashed depravity. Take a gander.

And that's the light stuff. Shield the ears of any children present when viewing his take on the Aristocrats. WOW. The bipolar opposite of a toast, the roast scrounges up celebrities that have a mild to moderate relationship to the roastee with the sole intent of celebrating their career by tearing them a new one for the sake of a few laughs. John Stamos, Saget's hip brother-in-law, Uncle Jesse, on Full House, hosted the festivities while FH co-stars Lori Loughlin, Dave Coulier and Jodie Sweetin all showed to ensure Saget was well cared for.

Speakers included mostly stand-up comics who dallied with Saget in the club circuit including Jon Lovitz, Norm MacDonald and Gilbert Gottfried. I love when Gottfried appears on anything. The man doesn't have a funny bone in his entire body and yet his gimmick - a shrill, nasally voice accompanied by those small, tight eyes and Chiclet-sized teeth - is downright infectious. His bar jokes were distinctly lame and continued the evening's trend of pot-shotting the Olsen Twins but his rare jack-in-the-box appearances every blue moon warms my heart and affords hope to the young and talented.

If Gottfried does anything, he enhances everyone else's material. Not that she needed it but Cloris Leachman, an Oscar and record-setting 9-time Emmy winner, killed the show. Seriously. If the Bob Saget Roast were a dragon, she slayed the damned thing with her mighty Excalibur of hilarity. Words cannot do her justice. Instead, check out the link below to Comedy Central’s preview. It’s the best I could do on short notice. Look out for the dvd in the future if you missed it the first time around.
