And the Oscar goes to???
There was something missing in last night's Oscar show as there has been for the last 78 years. Can't guess what it is? You'll have to read on to find out.
I know that this topic is not what I usually write about but considering all the press that it gets and all the opinions that are spilled, I figured, why not me? I'd also like to be able to sound off like I know what I'm talking about and pretend I'm an expert, even if I only have as much talent as you're friendly neighbourhood seat filler. OK....so I wish I had as much talent as a seat filler.
But I digress. As the Movie Minx said, seeing Three 6 Mafia win was.....different. However, "they" did not have a great performance. As much as I love Hip Hop, I can't say that three guys bobbing back and forth and rapping without being in sync, making them nearly incomprehensible, is a great performance. Mind you the whole performance around them was pretty good. I've just gotta say that in all these years of watching the Oscars, I never thought I'd see anyone get in, let alone accept an award without a tux. I guess the times they are a changin' and Oscar will try to do anything to attract a bigger audience as apparently Sunday night had the second lowest ratings in 24 years.
As for John Stewart. He was hilarious. And just because some thought, he should have been more political, I thought he made the correct choice by just roasting people on the spot and keeping it more about the industry. The man obviously knew there was no challenge in making Bush jokes in front of a predominantly Democratic audience and I applaud him for taking the road less travelled.
And what's the deal with Billy Crystal. Does anyone even remember his hosting of the Oscars any more. Those appearances have grown to mythical proportions which no-one could ever live up to.
However, the Oscars missed the boat in a few ways and yes, you missed something if you didn't see the end of the show. Sorry Minx. Every person had that "you should be shutting up" music in the back ground and I know that I wasn't the only person who couldn't stand it. But it took to the last award of the night to show us that even the Oscars, for all their well dressed stars, can show a lack of class. As CRASH won the best movie (great flick) and as the thank you speech was in progress, during that god awful soft music, the recipients were cut off before they could finish by even louder music and as they tried to speak louder, their mike was cut off so that the show could claim it ended in 3 hours and 30 minutes. As the saying goes, that just put the ASS in CLASS. Nothing like making your biggest award seem like an afterthought, especially when people seemed to wake up cause an underdog got the top prize. But the most important mission of the night was accomplished as they managed to shave a few more precious seconds off the show. That was quite an accomplishment. They deserve an Oscar.
But back to where I started. Here's a hint. The Minx made some good points. Here's a hint. The most entertaining parts of the show, were John Stewart, Ben Stiller, Will Farrel, Steve Carrell, that former hosts piece and the smear campaigns. Can you all see what I'm getting at? The Oscars have been boring since the show started and they have turned to comedians to host the show to liven it up. This year they added all these funny and entertaining skits.
The Oscars are starting to realize they need comedy to survive yet they continue to slap this bastard child by not recognizing comedy with its own category. Not even one. Not even in that pre-Oscars, no body watches or cares, technical Oscars show, or whatever it is. Everybody knows how to make someone cry, make them sad or feel the love on the screen. You could almost say it's a formula. Yet comedy is so challenging with not any one thing working for all. You never know if it's going to work. You need exceptional talent to put a good comedy together including, writing, acting, etc. But nothing. According to Oscar it's not important and hasn't been in the last 78 years. Unlike make-up. However, when it comes time to find a host, a role that's so highly regarded, they turn to comedians. People they have never recognized as being worthy or deserving of an Oscar.
That's my beef. But since no-one apparently watched the show, because they were beat from watching 3 hours of red carpet coverage (which looks to be the real attraction for most) no-one probably cares.
