Hollywood's biggest night of the year has come and gone. The 78th Annual Academy Awards were handed out last night with all the glitz and glamour the world has come to expect. The real question is: does anyone out there care?

Is it all about politics or are these awards given out to the people who actually deserve them? It's said that the majority of the Academy members are ancient old people who sometimes don't even see all the movies nominated in any given category. Having said that, I think the biggest surprise of the evening was the announcement of "It's Hard Out There For a Pimp" as best song.

Three 6 Mafia put in a great performance, and followed up with the most enthusiastic acceptance speech of the evening. It's nice to see people up there get truly excited about taking home the statue.
Now, it wouldn't be prudent of me to make any comments on the Oscars show without talking about the newest host, John Stewart. He definitely wins the best host of recent years award.

The intro was a turn away from Billy Crystal's usual song and dance routine, and I really liked the way the former hosts made appearances in a little segment showing each of them turn down the gig. I think John Stewart was the best choice the Academy could have made. He wasn't as scathing as he could've been but he did whip out a few cracks that were worth a good laugh. The Oscar campaign attack ads were a highlight from the whole evening. Truly though, what was up with all the montages? I love a good montage, especially a movie montage where I try to name every film shown in the short span of time... but there was a whole bunch last night that left me wondering, "What was that for?" I mean come on, if you're gonna throw together a bunch of movie clips, it should have a purpose. The one that showed how "un-gay" the Western genre was before Brokeback was good, but the others seemed to just be kinda pointless nomatter how much I enjoyed them.
Best presenters of the night, without doubt: Will Farrell and Steve Carrell. Coming out to present the Best Makeup award, they were each done up with subtle touches to make their point.

Those guys are great together. Runner up for best presenter is either Jennifer Garner who nearly wiped out walking to the podium, or Ben Stiller doing a very wacky job in a green jumpsuit presenting best visual effects.
Truth be told, I fell asleep before they announced the best picture. But I don't really feel like I missed out. I caught all the news and highlights this morning. Part of me gets all excited at Oscar time wondering who's gonna win, but a very large part of me believes its a scam. People aren't necessarily given awards because they did the best job, or because one movie really is better than another. How can you judge such a thing anyway? I can't remember who said it last night (Clooney maybe?) but unless every actor portrays the same role, you can't truly compare the performances. I'm glad Clooney won, I'm upset that Reese won (should've been Felicity), but I think all the best pic noms were pretty good and probably each deserved the recognition they got. This year's awards were nicely spread out across a number of movies, which is kind of nice to see. On the other hand, I love it when one great pic comes out and sweeps the whole show.
I like to judge movies on their own merits, not on whether or not they got awards. In 15 years, will anyone remember that Crash won? Maybe, maybe not. But I bet Brokeback will be a running joke for many many years to come.
