Last week, it was announced that a new mammal species was discovered: Meet the Olinguito, a close relative of the raccoon. For over the past 100 years, this new species has been mistaken for olingos, another close relative, though extensive research has shown that the olinguito is smaller with denser fur. Native to the cloud forests of Ecuador and Colombia, the olinguito is the first carnivore species to be discovered in the American continents in the past 35 years. Even though they do eat meat, the olinguito’s primary diet consists of fruit.
So, congratulations fellow mammal, and welcome to the family!
