Who Would You Cast? The Other Avengers

October 13th, 2011

If you’ve seen the latest trailer for The Avengers movie, you must be pretty excited (provided you’re into that whole superhero thing). Whether it was the ominous tone of Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Nine Inch Nails’ song “We’re In This Together Now”, or Robert Downey Jr.’s quips about The Hulk, this trailer looks amazing, and one can only anticipate that it’s just showing us a fraction of what the whole movie will have to offer. For one thing, Marvel movies are infamous for allusions to, and appearances from, other Marvel heroes and villains, and it’s usually only the die-hard comic lovers who can easily spot them.

So, can we expect to see appearances from other Marvel superheroes and supervillains? The Avengers roster is very expansive, and while the chances that Spider-Man or Wolverine will appear in this movie are very slim (they’ve been in the spotlight for long enough), other characters like Ant-Man, The Wasp and even Namor are yet to see big screen imaginings. Plus, they’re quintessential to The Avengers mythos.

Here’s a look at the characters that should (and hopefully will) show up in the new Avengers movie, and the actors who should play them.

Nathan Fillion and Eva Longoria as Dr. Henry Pym (a.k.a. Ant-Man/Giant-Man) and Janet van Dyne (a.k.a. The Wasp)

Apparently, both The Wasp and Ant-Man are going to be in the new Avengers film and rumor has it that Eva Longoria has been cast to play Wasp, and Nathan Fillion is going to be Ant-Man. These are just rumours but here are a few reasons why they just might be the right choice for the job.

One of the original members of The Avengers, fans would be disappointed if Dr. Henry Pym, better known as Ant-Man, and later Giant-Man, didn’t even have a very small appearance in the new movie (get it? “Small appearance”? ‘Cause he’s Ant-Man?). He wouldn’t even have to be a superhero yet – he could just be a guy who is working on shrinking technology for SHIELD, along with his wife/lab assistant, Janet van Dyne (a.k.a. The Wasp). So, why Nathan Fillion? Well, he does a great job of playing those stoic action heroes, kinda like he did in Dr. Horrible. Plus, he’d be able to pull off the geeky scientist as well, which is great since that is Pym’s job.

Janet van Dyne is a bit self-centered and shallow, and flip-flops between superheroics and a normal life. When she’s not buzzing around, she’s doing the whole socialite act, wearing expensive dresses, and schmoozing with celebs. It sounds a lot like Eva Longoria‘s character on Desperate Housewives, so rumor or not, get Eva to play The Wasp.

Chiwetel Ejiofor as Black Panther

The King of Wakanda and member of The Avengers, Black Panther helped to break down racial barriers in comic books by being one of the first black superheroes. Chiwetel Ejiofor would be an excellent choice for this role, hands down. He’s not only quite the thespian, having starred in productions of various plays by Shakespeare, he’s also got some killer fighting moves, which can be seen in the movie Serenity.

Zachary Quinto as Namor The Submariner

Namor is usually at odds with The Avengers, as he believes the problems of the “surface world” are none of his concern. However, he has been a member of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and even fought alongside Cap during WWII. It’s not a stretch for Quinto to play Namor, as it’s essentially Spock in swim trunks.

Evangeline Lilly as Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, is a mutant with the ability to manipulate reality. Her father is none other than the infamous Magneto, though Wanda renounced her villainous ways and joined the ranks of The Avengers. Evangeline Lilly has gained a lot of attention these days, from her big breakthrough on Lost to appearing alongside Hugh Jackman in Real Steel. She’s sexy, but with an edge, which would make for a great Scarlet Witch.

Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Cage

The Old Spice Guy has already pushed to play Luke Cage, by having the above trailer produced. Whether or not he’ll actually appear in The Avengers remains to be seen, though Marvel has already recognized his efforts by putting him in this ‘What The–?!’ sketch:

Matthew Goode as Baron Zemo

Baron Zemo is an old foe of Captain America’s, who forms the villainous Masters of Evil as a counterpart to The Avengers. After his death, his son takes on the mantle, and tries several times to take over the planet. Whether it’d be the WWII-era Zemo or the current one (The Avengers have dealt with both), Matthew Goode’s calculated and creepy performance as Ozymandias in Watchmen would translate very well into this villain.
